Getty Villa Courtyard 2

Another picture from the Getty Villa in Malibu. Roman architecture in the first century CE, particularly that of villas, stressed visual lines throughout the complex. This view is taken looking out from the area where the bedrooms would have been and out into the courtyard. Beyond the courtyard and through the other doorway is the garden, which is slightly visible.

The Getty Villa is a gorgeous museum modeled after the Villa de Papyri from Herculaneum, which was covered up by the explosive erruption of Vesuvius in 79CE. The museum unfortunately has a dark history of looted antiquities that it is slowly recovering from, though it still has a ways to go.
